Things to consider before signing up for a woodworking class.
Child readiness. Please ask yourself these questions. If the answer is yes to all, they are ready for this class.
Can my child follow multi-step instructions?
Do they show basic responsibility and focus?
Can they operate basic school tools (Scissors, pencil sharpener, liquid glue)?
Can they handle constructive correction?
Are they comfortable with hands-on learning and mild trial-and-error frustration?
Safety is a priority. The tools they will be using are safe if used correctly. Many of the tools will be sharp. Listening and following instructions are essential in creating a safe work environment. Safety equipment (Safety glasses) will be provided. Hearing protection is not needed, but is available if needed. Students will need to have closed-toe shoes and hair pulled back. Crocs and similar shoes will not be allowed.
Location is open to the outside. The classroom is set up in a garage and will be open to the outside. If it is cold or hot outside, it will be similar in the classroom. Please dress accordingly. The classroom is also a workshop and has several power and hand tools. Although most power tools are not plugged in, they are accessible.
Accommodations for special needs. I believe that everyone can benefit from the skills taught through woodworking. I will try to accommodate as much as possible. The students will be standing for most of the class.
Environmental risks. This is an active wood shop. There is dust and other chemicals that are known to cause allergic reactions and cancer. Walnut wood dust is known to cause anaphylaxis to those with nut allergies. There will be hammering and other loud noises.
FAQ
Do I need to provide tools and materials? All materials and tools needed to complete the projects will be provided and are part of the cost of the class.
Is there a material fee? No. All materials will be provided.
What materials will be used for the projects? The primary wood species will be poplar. It is a softer wood that is easy to work with. There may be other domestic hardwoods used depending on availability.
Will my child be able to design their own projects? Projects and plans will be provided. They will have some creative flexibility. Much of the design work has been completed.
What is the class size? The class will be limited to 4 students.
Will the students be using power tools? No. All tools will be hand-powered.
Does the student need any prior experience working with tools? No. The basic skills will be taught. Some basic math skills are expected (addition, subtraction, and understanding what a fraction is)
How long is each class? Each class is 90 minutes long. There will be brief skill and safety instruction, a project plan, and then most will be hands-on.
What if the student is unable to make a class? I can offer a makeup session based on my schedule. It may be prior to the official class or on a Saturday.
When is class payment due? Payment is due the week before the first day of class. Late payment may result in forfeiture of the class. Payment is cash, check, Venmo, or Square.
Classroom Setup
There will be four students in each class. Each student will have a workbench they will share with another student. The workbench will have all the hand tools needed to complete the projects. There will be some fixtures that will be shared between the students.
How the Lessons are Structured
There will be an initial discussion about a part of woodworking, such as design, materials, and fasteners. A project will be introduced and the class will discuss materials, how to make it, safety concerns, and tips. Students will then be able to make the project on their own.
